Ixys Announces new 140A 1600V, Highest Power Density Thyristor.
Ixys corporation announces introduction of MCMA140 back to back SCR module ,
intended for UPS, power quality equipment, and motor drives. According to Ixys it is the
highest power density Thyristor module in the industry standard TO240 outline. MCMA140
has a rated current of 140 amperes at a module case temperature of 85C degrees. Current
voltage rating is 1600V planned for 800 to 2,200 volts in future products.

Mitsubishi begins smart grid demonstration project that charges energy in electric vehicles
batteries during the night, for providing continuous power routed to the grid when needed by
offices and factory facilities .The project is managed by Mitsubishi and Mitsubishi Electric
Corporation with Toyota's advice. The project targets reducing 180kW fluctuation range to
33%, while reducing cost by using vehicle batteries instead of UPS dedicated batteries.

Emerson introduces Liebert NXL™ 1100kVA/1100kW transformer- based UPS to offer
medium to large data centers a level of operating efficiency previously available in transformer-
free systems with the safety, fault tolerance, and reliability demonstrated by transformer-based
systems. The Liebert NXL UPS is UL and CSA listed and is available in 480, 575 or 600VAC.

CDW : Power Saving of 21% is Achieved by implementing New Efficient UPS Systems New
CDW 2011 Energy Efficiency Report of 760 IT professionals survey indicates that 54% of IT
departments are focusing on energy consumption, which was successful for 75% of the
surveyed professionals. The report indicates top 8 factors including response percentage of

First Fujitsu Data Center in China with 99.999% Availability
Fujitsu launched its first data center in China targeting financial institutions. The 12,200 square
meter Data Center, which is the first Tier 3-plus data center in southern China, will offer its
customers co-location, hosting and managing services, project services, and provide
emergency backup and data restoration services . The Data Center is equipped with a Diesel
Rotary UPS having 99.999 percent availability, which needs 1.5 seconds to start up fully and

Lahore Newspaper and TV report that a committee investigates why an 18-year-old girl did
not wake up after a surgery, during which a utility power outage occurred. The Doctor that
operated the patient said that "though the hospital has back-up power arrangements, the
difference in voltage between the original power supply and the back-up frequently causes
problems in the functioning of medical equipment. Sometimes, he said, the equipment stops
working altogether. Equipment worth Rs5 million has been damaged."

EnerSys and PowerGenix sign Agreement to provide Ni-Zinc Batteries to Enersys Customers.
EnerSys , announced that it has completed a license and technology development agreement
with PowerGenix Systems, Inc. to provide nickel-zinc batteries to its customers worldwide.
The license is based according to Enersys on its " experience around lead, lithium and nickel
solutions and the conclusion that nickel-zinc can fill an important market segment for harsh
and high integrity back-up power platforms for uninterruptible power supplies, rail and other

Emerson acquired Avtron Loadbank , producer of load banks, testing systems and services for
standby power generation, UPS systems and other power equipment industries. Avtron
Loadbank manufactures resistive and reactive load banks, neutral grounding resistors and
industrial power resistors, used for factory testing, commissioning, service and periodic
exercising of standby emergency power systems, which include diesel generator sets, gas
turbine generators, UPS systems and back-up battery systems. The business will be

Rockwell Automation, announces purchasing assets of SoftSwitching Technologies,
Soft Switching technologies is a manufacturer of power grid alerts monitor and Power

computerized machinery to go off-line, precision instruments to fail, and control systems to

Gloomy Outlook on Uninterruptible Power Supply Market in the Near Future.
Based on new IMS Research, UPS market showed year-over-year growth slow to 5% in Q4
2011 following three consecutive quarters of double digit growth. Europe, the Middle East, and
Africa (EMEA) saw faster growing sales in the mid-range to large UPS after being flat in 2010,
however these seem to change as problems with economic stability continue and the region
slides back into recession. Due to the internal debt in Europe, EMEA's UPS market will contract

Prepay for Electricity and Enjoy Uninterrupted Power Supply.
In a move to eliminate wastage and make consumers pay for whatever they use, the
Electricity Department of Manipur, India, is all set to introduce Pre-paid power supply meters
for the first time in the state from March next. The consumers under the pre-paid meter
system will be able to deposit an amount ranging from Rs 500 to Rs 7000 in their respective
accounts, to enjoy uninterrupted power supply as long as there is balance in their accounts.
The initiation of pre-paid electronic meter was taken up primarily to put an end to illegal power

Active Power Increases Revenue and Losses.
Active Power, UPS Flywheel manufacturer, reported increase in losses to about $ 7m in 2011,
compared to $ 3.9m in 2010. Because of lower margins and business performance, losses
grew, in spite of increased revenues, to US$ 75.5m versus $ 65m in 2010. Sales numbers
grew across all of its regions in 2011: Americas up 2%, EMEA up 47% and Asia up 76%.
Company's UPS revenue for the year was $26.4m – a 20% decrease year over year,
continuous power and infrastructure solutions revenue totaled $40.5m, and Services
revenue for 2011 was $12.8m – a 38% increase from the prior year.

US intends Doubling Capacity of Geospacial-Intelligence Agency’s Data Center.
The US Army issued a notice for a Tier 2 data center in National Geospacial-Intelligence
Agency’s (NGA) campus in Springfield, Virginia . The Data center will include, two large
uninterruptible power supply (UPS) battery arrays, in addition to rotary UPS systems, to
provide 99.741%, N+1 availability and power density of 150 watts per square foot. The IT
equipment will be required to receive power from two different sources.
